Delayed or absent verbal development is a core symptom of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), and it’s one that can cause the most difficulty for a child and their family. Lack of verbal skills causes difficulties in communication and socialization, leading to frustration for the child and his/her caretaker, family members, teachers and peers. Verbal Behavior Analysis teaches communication skills (i.e., receptiveand expressive language) through the use of ABA principles. Verbal Behavior therapy motivates your child to learn language by connecting meaning of sounds/words with their purpose.
The use of Verbal Behavior allows us to achieve one of our primary goals at JumpStart Autism Center, which is to ensure children with autism boost their verbal and communication skills to eliminate frustration and close the gap with neuro-typical peers. We know that all behavior serves a function, and we’ve developed a Verbal Behavior curricula to specific address the verbal needs of children with ASD.
Verbal Behavior Analysis
As part of our autism assessment and diagnosis, we use the Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (VB-MAPP). The VB-MAPP consists of tracking and assessment across several categories, beginning with a milestone assessment to provide a sample of a child’s existing skills. There are 170 measurable milestones in this assessment.
Next is a barriers assessment, which allows us to identify the exact problems or learning barriers are slowing a child’s development. Once those have been identified, we can begin working on them through Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) techniques, tracking the performance and growth of the child through the VB-MAPP transition assessment.
Our Applied Behavioral Analysis Treatments
Once we have completed the initial assessment, we have a baseline from which to work when developing your child’s unique treatment. We have developed a comprehensive Verbal Behavior eurricula to efficiently and effectively teach your child communication skills and reduce challenging behaviors. Our Applied Behavior Analysis programs are founded on Verbal Behavior, therefore, our ABA services are intensive language therapy sessions that are designed to teach your child to talk and expand functional communication skills. Moreover, our ABA programs are individualized for your child’s needs, and ongoing assessments provide clear data about the trajectory of current trends about their learning and development. This allows us to make changes as necessary to ensure consistent improvement and for you to see their progress through visual representation of the data.
